Victory Abang

Victory’s Background

Victory is a dually qualified barrister with rights of audience in Nigeria, and England & Wales. Before transferring to the English bar, Victory had a busy practise in Nigeria, representing high profile clients in civil and criminal courts. Some of these cases include corporate and financial crimes, libel, breach of contracts, real property disputes, and enforcements of foreign arbitral awards.

Since his transfer to the English bar, Victory has been regularly instructed to prosecute and defend in the crown courts, magistrates courts and youth courts in relation to a broad range of criminal offences including controlling and coercive behaviour, affray, drug offences, sexual offences, robbery/theft, fraud, dangerous driving, causing unnecessary suffering to protected animals etc. Victory is popular with lay clients, who appreciate his ability to put them at ease, and easily earn their trust. He has been described by lay clients to be exceptionally convincing, and to have “a response for everything”.

Victory enjoys his criminal practise, but also accepts instructions for civil matters including personal injury claims, mortgage possession and Sec 21 possessions. He holds a masters degree in corporate and commercial law from Queen Mary University of London, and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, UK.

Notable Cases:

R v LR:

Represented a vulnerable person (LR) at this youth court trial. LR and a group of young boys were charged with affray, and captured on video. Despite overwhelming evidence from the crown, LR was found not guilty after a 2 day trial.

R v KP:

Represented KP in this assault on emergency worker/ going equipped for theft trial at the crown court. KP was found not guilty by a jury after a 5 day trial.

R v YD:

A group of boys (including YD), were accused of theft, and they all pled guilty. After Victory’s conference with YD, he advised YD to plead not guilty. YD was eventually found not guilty after trial, amid tears.

R v AK:

AK was charged with battery in a context of domestic abuse. Following a very compelling closing speech, Victory was able to highlight several inconsistencies in the crown’s evidence, which led to a not guilty verdict from a district judge.

R v AS:

Victory represented AS in this trial for dangerous driving. Victory was able to show that AS has not been properly identified by any of the witnesses of the crown, leading to a not guilty verdict by the court.
